Youth Media Literacy Program

The Uthryve Network's Youth Media Literacy Program is designed to equip children and young adolescents (aged 5-15) with the essential skills to navigate this complex environment, becoming not just consumers, but also critical thinkers and responsible creators of media.

Empowering Young Minds in the Digital Age

In today's rapidly evolving digital landscape, young people are constantly immersed in a vast ocean of information and content. The Uthryve Network's Youth Media Literacy Program is designed to equip children and young adolescents (aged 5-15) with the essential skills to navigate this complex environment, becoming not just consumers, but also critical thinkers and responsible creators of media.

Our Program Goals

The Youth Media Literacy Program is built around key objectives designed to foster a comprehensive understanding and application of media skills:

  • Develop Critical Media Analysis Skills: Enable participants to assess the value, authenticity, authority, and intention of the information they encounter.
  • Foster Creative Storytelling Abilities: Teach children to craft compelling narratives that communicate effectively across diverse media formats.
  • Build Age-Appropriate Technical Skills: Provide hands-on experience with media production tools, including basic filming, editing, and audio recording.
  • Promote Responsible Media Consumption and Creation: Instill ethical principles and responsible practices in both consuming and creating media content.
  • Enhance Digital Citizenship: Prepare children to participate positively and safely in digital environments.

    Target Demographic & Tailored Learning

    The program serves children aged 5-15, divided into three age-appropriate cohorts to ensure tailored and effective learning experiences:

Junior Group (5-8 years)

Focuses on basic media awareness, simple storytelling, and guided media creation.

Intermediate Group (9-12 years)

Develops more advanced critical thinking skills, structured storytelling, and semi-independent media production.

Senior Group (13-15 years)

Advances to sophisticated media analysis, complex narrative development, and independent media projects.

Media Awareness Foundations

Introduction to different media types, distinguishing between information, entertainment, and advertising, and age-appropriate discussions about media influence.

Critical Thinking and Analysis

Evaluating media messages and sources, identifying bias, fact-checking techniques, and media comparison exercises.

Storytelling and Content Creation

Narrative structure, character development, storyboarding, and creative expression through various media formats.

Technical Skills Development
Responsible Media Practices

Digital citizenship, online safety, copyright and fair use principles, ethical considerations, and positive media representation.

Submission Guidelines

Ready to share your ideas? Please ensure your submission adheres to the following:

Originality: All submissions must be your original, unpublished work.
Language: Essays can be submitted in English or French.
Word Limit: Submissions should be between 1,000 and 1,500 words.
Format: Typed, double-spaced, using Times New Roman font, size 12.
Content: Essays should clearly address the theme, provide well-supported arguments, and propose actionable ideas.
Anonymity: Do not include personal information on the essay document itself. A separate cover page should include your name, age, contact information, and essay title.

Deadline: The deadline for submissions is [July 30, 2025].
Submission Method: Essays must be submitted electronically through the Uthryve Network website [link to submission portal]
